Basically, teddy bears have been around since 1902. The teddy bear came to being when President Theodore Roosevelt denied shooting a black bear held in prison by his hunting party. Also worth noting is that President Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot this imprisoned bear became a very popular political cartoon by Cliff Barryman.
A Brooklyn shopkeeper was motivated by the cartoon. The shopkeeper then requested President Roosevelt to grant him permission to name a toy bear “Teddy”. Thus became the creation of the teddy bear.
It is also important to know that the teddy bear was mainly born in Germany between the year 1902 and 1903.
The earlier teddy bears did not have cuddly smiles or faces, actually, the first teddy bears had expressions which can be best explained as stoic. Teddy bears were also very stiff, the bendable legs and arms and plush, soft bodies came much later.
Presently, teddy bears are still considered as the best item to offer babies as their first toy, the prize to win heart of your girl on your first date and most significantly, the toy of choice for law enforcement to provide to children in unsafe, sad conditions to help them feel safe and calm down.
